Connecting People with the Joy of Quilting

Hi <%[First]%> <%[Last]%>,

Hello, my Quilters in Paradise!

Can you believe that it's both spring and April already? If you've been following my newsletter, you'll have correctly surmised that I sure am glad that “March Madness” is now behind us. However, my discussions with my husband, Mark, continue at the conference table. As it turns out, we had to make our monthly key strategic decision about what April's coupon should be. Here’s how that discussion played out …

After kicking a bunch of ideas around that we just couldn't get excited about, Mark asked me, “Is there anything that happened in March that naturally leads to what we should do in April?”

“Well, we sold a lot of fabric thanks to the quilt run and March’s coupon,” I replied.

The ensuing silence seemed to foreshadow yet another dead end. And then it hit me. “I know, “ I continued. “We seem to have a lot of fat quarters from the fabric left over on the bolts from all the fabric we sold. Let’s make the coupon good for fat quarters.”

“Makes sense,” he replied mulling it over. “You can save a bundle on a bundle of fat quarters.”

“Exactly.” I cleared my throat to avoid choking on yet another of his play on words. Regaining my composure I said, “The question is: How many fat quarters does one have to get with the coupon to save a bundle?”

“That’s easy,” he confidently replied. “Ten.”

“Why ten?” I asked.

“Simple. It’s easy to remember. And, besides, in my book, you’re a ten, too,” he said gazing at me.

"Where did that come from?" I silently asked myself. Men are such simple creatures, but yes, sometimes, flattery will get you somewhere, just not right now. “Ok, then how much if they buy ten?”

“Again, easy. What’s going on in April?” he countered with a question.

“Easter?”

“Yes, it is this year. But what else? What always occurs in April?”

Of course! “Tax day.”

“Yup … and what is the date that taxes are due?”

“April 15th.”

“See, you remembered. Everyone knows that date. Now, if you use 4 as the number of the month for April, it’s 4-15.”

I stared at him blankly.

“Don't you get it? Just say all the numbers: 10 4 15. Ten fat quarters for 15 dollars.”

Groan. I keep asking myself where he gets all these ideas, but to no avail. All I can say is that "10 4 15" is kinda catchy, works for me and I hope works for you, too.

I've been having a lot of fun in "laser land" with my daughter, Laura, who's now working here regularly. Together, we've introduced several new laser-cut kits in the last couple of weeks including: Bear Trio, Deer Trio, Moose Trio, and May's Every Month Table Runner all designed by Jeri Kelly.
And, this Saturday, April 3rd at 8:30, we're having our monthly Finish It Today (FIT) demo where Wendy Mathson will be showing a gorgeous pattern and how to make it easily and perfectly using our laser-cut kits or laser-cut acrylic templates. Remember, you have to attend the demo to get the free acrylic templates, Wendy's informative FIT notes, and 15% off all non-sale merchandise that day. If you can't make it, another demo will be held Thursday evening at 7 pm on April 8th.

While I'm talking about our laser, we've had several requests to cut larger square acrylic templates, such as one that would produce a finished 16-inch square. No problem! After working with our materials supplier, we can now support square acrylic templates up to 17-1/2 inches square.

What do April showers bring? More classes, of course! We've updated our calendar through May and have several sweet classes for you to partake in:
  • Betty Alofs is introducing a super fun class called Embellish It! where you learn all kinds of ways to embellish your quilt,
  • Carol Kaplan is offering a chance to all of those who who've already taken a class with her and just need a little help to finish your project with Workshop with Carol,
  • Wendy Mathson is starting another round of classes for beginners with Beginning Quilting & Skill Building, and she's available to help anyone with any of their projects with Open Sewing with Wendy,
  • Grace Errea is holding an amazing class called Creative Threadwork - Introduction to Drawing and Painting with Thread, and
  • Lyn Mann is teaching her wonderful The Geese Are Cruisin'.

A couple of quick reminders ... We will be closed this Sunday, April 4th for Easter and we hope you have a safe and wonderful day with your family and friends. Next, our semi-annual
Cash for Stash event is only a couple weeks away, from Saturday, April 17th through Saturday, April 24th.

In closing, let me leave you with something that I hope will bring a smile to your face. I’ve heard Mark mention a number of times that when you're working at the cutting table, you're sometimes putting on a small performance for the customers while they watch and wait. Things like: conversing on a wide range of topics like an eloquent world traveller, cutting multiple fabrics at one time with the grace of an Olympic athlete, calculating how much fabric is needed like a NASA engineer, dispensing invaluable tips with the light touch of a teacher, and neatly folding the cut fabric with the flair of Martha Stewart. So, last week he came up with a song called Cuttin' Man which is sung to Billy Joel's Piano Man. I hope you'll be as "cut up" as I was ...
