This calculator determines how much fabric yardage is needed to make a backing for a quilt
assuming that the backing is diagonally pieced
(see illustration below).
This method uses less fabric than traditional pieced backings
when the quilt backing width (including overage) is 1.5 times the width of fabric or less.
For example,
if the width of the fabric being used for the backing is 43 inches,
this method is appropriate for quilt backing widths (including overage) of 64 inches or less.
The diagonally pieced method and associated formulas for calculating yardage were devised by John Flynn
(www.flynnquilt.com).
To use the calculator, enter the width of the backing fabric along with the quilt's width and length. You may also enter an overage amount which will be added to each side of the quilt. (The default is that no overage is added.) For example, suppose you want an overage of 4 inches and your finished quilt is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. The calculator determines how much yardage is required to cover an area 68 inches (60 + 4 + 4) by 88 inches (80 + 4 + 4). The calculator assumes (and automatically takes into account) a 1/2" seam for diagonally sewing the two backing pieces together. It calculates how long the backing fabric piece needs to be and converts that length into yardage rounding up to the nearest eighth of a yard. ![]() |
